Luckenbach
Luckenbach was established in 1849 and has slowly, ever so slowly, been making its way forward in time. You'll notice almost immediately the laid back culture and the unwillingness to move too swiftly.
Luckenbach is located 1.5 hours southwest of Austin -- 1.25 hrs north of San Antonio
I'm not even sure you could call Luckenbach a town -- it's a few buildings and a bathroom, all within 50 paces. But they are rustic, filled with character and full of stories...just like a cowboy.
This is a place where you can spend some time living in the old west. Try to plan your trip around an event or music festival because there's not much else going on.
When we rolled into town, we found guitar plucking happening out back of the post office under a sweeping oak tree.
When you roll into town you'll find a post office doing business as a general store, doing business as a bar. It reminded me of one of those old movies where the sheriff is the judge and the innkeeper, with a quick change of the hat.
There's an antique dance hall that has ongoing live bands. You can also rent out the entire hall and property to host your wedding, reunion or other large event.
Combining a trip to this town and Fredericksburg would be a wonderful option. They are located only about 15 min tues apart by car, but a century apart in flavor and commercialism.

The very thought of a roadtrip sparks energy in the air. As a college student, my best friend and I would stock the car with candy bars, sodas and enough clothing to last a week. We'd head off to Vegas or the mountains or sites yet unknown for an overnight.
