Austin

Hotel San Jose: Hip and Happening on South Congress. It's a self-described, urban bungalow style hotel. Check out the website for some great photos. It's close to the action, water, trendy shopping and great restaurants.

Hyatt Regency Austin: Yeah, it's not unique and doesn't exude a bunch of character, but it sits on the shores of Town Lake. It's convenient to Zilker Park, great shopping and great downtown clubs, bars and restaurants.

Blanco

Ye Kendall Inn

Blanco Settlement is what all RV Parks should aspire to. Sitting just a few miles outside of Blanco with the Blanco River running along one side and Ranch Road 165 on the other, the park is very clean, manicured and well-maintained. There are 20 RV sites, all with riverfront views. On-site laundry facility, restrooms and showers, picnic tables and BBQ fire pits. They also haveBlano RV 30/50 AMPs. I'm not sure what that means, but I'm guessing it'll keep your RV fully charged.

The well-stocked gift store is overflowing with high-quality items ranging from jewelry to candles to quilts. And flowers are bursting all over the property.

Blanco CabinAs an added bonus, they offer nine fully-furnished, air-conditioned cabins with riverfront views. The cabins' architecture is rugged and welcoming and set apart from the RV sites, each cabin is named to inspire relaxation and good times.

Burnet

Canyon of the Eagles. This lovely retreat is a naturalist's paradise. It sits to the west of Burnet high above the shores of Lake Buchanan. As their website Canyon of the Eaglesproclaims, you can "listen for owls, kayak beneath a waterfall, explore the galaxy via telescope, or spend an evening with a cowboy poet." And of course, there's hiking and viewing areas to catch glimpses of the eagles.

We went up for the day and loved the pace and feel of the architecture and the grounds. The innkeeper on duty was a delight and very friendly. They have a small photo book which has photos of two rattle snakes locked in conflict in the reception area. It's wise to watch where you're walking. The innkeeper said she's only seen two snakes on the grounds during her tenure.

The have a patio area ripe for viewing the lake and beautiful sunsets. There's a medium-sized pool and TV available only in the recreation room.

Gruene/New Braunfels

Gruene Mansion Inn The Gruene Mansion Inn, also situated on the river, is an impressive establishment. A large white Victorian sits at street side with several additional buildings, some on the river. The breezeway between the “Hay Loft” and the “Hide Out” was especially enticing with two Adirondack chairs pushed up close to the edge of the deck and overlooking the clear waters below in the Guadalupe. Rooms range from $165-$235.

Gruene Apple BnBAnother bed and breakfast recently opened called the Gruene Apple Bed & Breakfast. It is situated a short block from Historic Gruene. I didn't get a chance to peak inside, but it looked very nice from the road. This place is newly built, so if you're looking for a historic location with character that comes only with time, pick the Mansion Inn above.
