Burnet
Lodging
Canyon of the Eagles. This lovely retreat is a naturalist's paradise. It sits to the west of Burnet high above the shores of Lake Buchanan. As their website
proclaims, you can "listen for owls, kayak beneath a waterfall, explore the galaxy via telescope, or spend an evening with a cowboy poet." And of course, there's hiking and viewing areas to catch glimpses of the eagles.
Burnet is located 1.5 hours northwest of Austin -- 2 hrs north of San Antonio
We went up for the day and loved the pace and feel of the architecture and the grounds. The innkeeper on duty was a delight and very friendly. They have a small photo book which has photos of two rattle snakes locked in conflict in the reception area. It's wise to watch where you're walking. The innkeeper said she's only seen two snakes on the grounds during her tenure.
The have a patio area ripe for viewing the lake and beautiful sunsets. There's a medium-sized pool and TV available only in the recreation room.
Drive Times
Getting from one place to another takes time in the Hill Country. Texas is a big state and there's a lot of land to traverse. I've put together a drive time grid of how long it takes to get from one place to another.
Roadtrips through the Hill Country
The very thought of a roadtrip sparks energy in the air. As a college student, my best friend and I would stock the car with candy bars, sodas and enough clothing to last a week. We'd head off to Vegas or the mountains or sites yet unknown for an overnight.
